Description

Kovalam offers an excellent diversity with Kovalam beach to suit all desires and occasions. Three curve shaped beaches, alienated by stony outcroppings, from the major attraction of this coastal resort.

Backed by precipitously mounting headlands and covered by fertile coconut palms, the beaches, especially the southern  most part of lighthouse beach. The sea port of Vizhinjam is about 3 km away and famous for its special varieties of fish, old Hindu temples, big churches and a mosque.

Kovalam was among the most famous travelor spots in India during the hippy epoch. It still has a high rank among tourists, who arrive mostly from Europe and Israel. There are more adventurous sports at Kovalam beach which are really pleasurable. This includes water diving, parasailing, wind surfing and many more.

 This ancient practice in Kerala has been proved of having immense medical benefits and hence Ayurvedic massages are popular among both the local as well as foreign tourists. Kovalam is also suited for honeymooners and it one of the best honeymoon destinations in Kerala.

Pozhikkara Beach

The beach of Poovar is in Pozhikkara at Pozhiyoor, where the Neyyar, Southern Peninsular river joins at the Arabian Sea.


Thiruvallam

It is the only temple in Kerala  dedicated to Lord Parasurama. The temple is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board. It is famous for Balitharpanam (a tribute to ancestors).


Anchuthengu Fort

The fort was the East India Company's first permanent post on the Malabar Coast. It played an important role in the Anglo-Mysore War.


Kovalam Museum

The museum was established in 1855. In 1874, the old Museum Building was demolished and foundation for the new building was laid. The new building was named after Lord napier. the Governor of Madras from 1866-1872.


Lighthouse Beach

The southernmost beach, the Lighthouse Beach is the one most frequented by tourists, Lighthouse Beach got its name due to the old Vizhinjam Lighthouse located on a 35 meter high on top of the Kurumkal hillock. The lighthouse is built using stones is colored in red and white bands and enjoys a height of 118 feet.


Karamana River and Boating

The Karamana river crosses the highway at Thiruvallam, twelve kilometers from Kovalam. The place offers breathtaking views of the backwater and greenery. The Thiruvallam boat club, located on the bank of the river offers cruises, canoe rides, kayaking and houseboat cruises.


Vellayani Lake

A road passes through this lake; a bund has been constructed for this purpose. This lake attracts a lot of tourists. Its crystal-clear calm water, especially during moonlit nights, is a craze for the minds. 


Valiyathura Pier

Supported by 127 concrete piles, the pier had four 3-tonne cranes and one 10-tonner to unload cargo from the ships. Since the pier was located in shallow waters, heavy ships had to anchor in the deep sea and transport their ware in smaller boats. 


Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple

he granite cave encloses a one-celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. The outer wall of the cave depicts half-complete reliefs of the Hindu God Shiva with Goddess Parvathi.


Aruvikkara Dam

The small Aruvikara dam (mini dam) which provides water to the state capital Thiruvananthapuram is also located in Aruvikara.


Varkala/Papanasham Beach

Varkala is a pilgrim centre and a tourist attraction that lies forty one km north of Thiruvananthapuram city by rail and 51 km by road. The Samadhi of Sree Narayana Guru the great social reformer and philosopher, attracts devotees in thousands.

The cliffs and mineral water springs at the Papanasam Beach  are tourist attractions. 


Neyyar Dam

Neyyar Dam is located across the Neyyar river flowing south of Thiruvananthapuram. Lying amidst the southern low hills of the Western Ghats, 29 km from the city, the catchment area offers facilities for boating and mountaineering. A three-hour climb over the hills across the reservoir affords the thrill of hiking. There are two beautiful waterfalls on the way. A Lion Safari Park and a Crocodile Rearing Centre  have also been set up in the reservoir.
