Munnar , Kerala


 Munnar  is a town and hill station  located in the Idukki district  of the south western Indian state of Kerala. Munnar is situated at around 1,600 metres above sea level, in the Western Ghat range of mountains.

The name Munnar is believed to mean "three rivers", referring to its location at the confluence of the Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. Munnar town is situated on the Kannan Devan Hills village in Devikulam taluk and is the largest panchayat in the Idukki district covering an area of nearly 557 square kilometres. The nearest major railway stations are at Ernakulam and Aluva. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport,which is 105 kilometres away.

Eravikulam National Park - 15 kms

The main body of the park consists of a high rolling hill plateau with a base elevation of about 2,000 m. A new bright reddish-orange-coloured frog with multiple glands and extremely short limbs has been discovered in the Eravikulam National Park. 

Devikulam - 07 kms

This idyllic hill stations with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air is a rare experience. The Sita Devi Lake with its mineral waters and picturesque surroundings is a good picnic spot.

Anamudi Lake

Located inside the Eravikulam National Park is the Anamudi Peak. This is the highest peak in south India standing at a height of over 2700 m. Treks to the peak are allowed with permission from the Forest and Wildlife authorities at Eravikulam.

Attukal - 9 kms

A panorama of waterfalls and rolling hills, attukal located between munnar and pallivasal is a feast for the eyes. the place is also ideal for long treaks.

Nyayamakad - 10 kms

Located between Munnar and Rajamala, Nyayamakad is a land of breathtaking waterfalls. The waters cascade down a hill from a height of about 1600 metres. 

Rajamala - 15 kms

This is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri tahr.The Nilgiri tahrs are today reduced to small herds found in the Eravikulam-Rajamala region.

Echo Point - 15 kms

This scenic place gets its name from the natural echo phenomenon here. Echo point is on the way to stations from munnar.

Top Station - 32 kms

Top Station, which is about 32 km from Munnar is at a height of 1700 m above sea level. It is the highest point on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road. It is one of the spots in Munnar to enjoy the Neelakurinji flowers blooming over a vast area.

Kundala - 20 kms

Kundala is picturesque town on the way to Top Stations. The Kundala artificial dam is another attraction.

Marayoor - 40 kms

 Marayur is the only place in Kerala that has natural sandalwood forests. Also called Muniyaras, the dolmens belong to the Iron age. These dolmenoids were burial chambers made of four stones placed on edge and covered by a fifth stone called the cap stone.  slabs. 

Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls - 42 kms

The Cheeyappara Waterfall cascades down in seven steps. This is also a great place for trekking. Valara has a chain of waterfalls surrounded by thick green forests. 

Anayirankal - 22 kms

 The spot is enriched with the scenic view of the Western Ghat ranges. Anayirangal, 22 km from Munnar, is a lush green carpet of tea plants.The Anayirangal dam is surrounded by tea plantations and evergreen forests.

Power House Waterfalls - 18 kms

This waterfall on the way to Thekkady from Munnar cascades down a steep rock, 2000m above sea level. Thee spot is enriched with the scenic western mountain ranges, and is an ideal place for a break on the way to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary - 60 kms

 It is one of twelve Wildlife Sanctuaries among the Protected areas of Kerala.There are 11 tribal settlements inside the Chinnar WLS, each is well demarcated by temporary stone walls. The main inhabitants areMuthuvas and Pulayars.

Pothamedu - 6 kms

Pothamedu offers an excellent view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in munnar. The rolling hills and the lush mountains here are ideal for trekking and long mountain walks.

Blossom International Park

Sprawled over 16 acres, this park has a garden with a profusion of blooms and a plethora of activities for adults and children including boating, cycling, roller skating, games etc.

Kolukkumalai-38 kms

Located in steep, rugged terrain, kolukkumalai is the highest tea garden in the country at 7,900 ft. Accessible only by jeep, a visit to the estate includes a drive around the tea fields and a tour of its factory. What gives kolukkumalai tea its special flavour is presumably the high altitude.
