The Tamil name is Puducherry which means "New Town". Historically known as Pondicherry the territory changed its official name to Puducherry on 20 September 2006. It is also known as "The French Riviera of the East".

Puducherry is one of the most popular tourist spots for national and international tourists. There are several beaches here. There is also Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where Sri Auribindo spent his last years. There are several temples,churches,monuments, parks and mosques which attract tourists.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

The Ashram was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo Ghose, an Indian freedom fighter, poet, philosopher, and yogi.Its spiritual tenets represent a synthesis of yoga and modern science.It is located on Rue De La Marine.


 Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville  is to realize human unity.

French War Memorial

The French War Memorial  is reminder of those brave soldiers who laid down their lives, for their country during the First World War.It was built in 1971. Every year on 14 July  the memorial is beautifully illuminated and homage is paid to those brave martyrs.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Gardens were laid out in 1826 in the ornate French style, with pruned trees, flower beds and gravel lined paths and fountains.The French introduced many exotic plants from all over the world. 

Sri Manakula Vinayakar Temple

It has a golden spire and walls portraying forty different forms of Ganesha. The temple also has a smaller shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, who is Ganesha’s younger brother. 

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

 It contains rare stained glass panels depicting events from the life of Christ. Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a Catholic church and is a white-and-brown structure.

Pondicherry Museum

The Pondicherry museum houses some of the interesting collections of sculpture is located in the Bharathi Park.There is also a very good collection of snail shells brought from the Pondicherry region.

Promenade Beach

Promenade beach  is the popular stretch of beach front in the city of Puducherry along the Bay of Bengal. It is a 1.2-kilometre-long stretch in Pondicherry, starts from War Memorial and end at Dupleix Park on the Goubert Ave.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

This is also called as Parent church for Catholic diocese for Pondicherry and Cuddalore.It is also called as "Samba Kovil”, which is a phonetic corruption of “Saint Paul’s Kovil”.

Varadharaja Perumal Temple

This temple is dedicated to Vishnu. The main deity here is Varadaraja perumal. Right behind that is a separate shrine for Narashima (who is also an avatar of Vishnu).
