Description

Mysore is one of the largest cities in the State of Karnataka, India. It is the headquarters of the Mysore district and the Mysore division in Karnataka. It lies about 140 km to the South-West of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka. Historically, the city was the capital of the Mysore Kingdom which was ruled by the Wodeyar Family.

Various arts and crafts thrived under the kings patronage, leading to the city earning the sobriquet of the cultural capital of Karnataka.

Mysore receives a large number of tourists most of whom visit the city during the 10 day celebrations that go on during the dashara festival. Mysore is also known as the city of palaces due to the large number of palaces that are present in the city.

Mysore Palace

 It was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore and also housed the durbar (royal offices). The term "Palace of Mysore" specifically refers to Amba Vilas.


Brindavan Gardens

Brindavan Gardens is a show garden that has a beautiful botanical park, full of exciting fountains, as well as boat rides beneath the dam. Diwans of Mysore planned and built the gardens in connection with the construction of the dam. Display items include a musical fountain. It is situated at Krishna Raja Sagara Dam.


Chamundi Hills

Chamundi Hills  is close to the palace city of Mysore. Its average elevation is 1,000 metres. A panoramic view of the city is seen from the top of the hills. It has views of the Lalitha Mahal palace, Mysore Palace, Karanji and Kukkarahalli lakes. 


Mysore Zoo

Mysore Zoo (Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Garden) is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in India. Located on the outskirts of Mysore, the zoo is home to a wide range of wild species. It was established under royal patronage in 1892, making it one of the oldest zoos in the world.


Srirangapatna

The entire town is enclosed by Kaveri to form an island . The town takes its name from the celebrated Ranganathaswamy temple  which dominates the town, making Srirangapattana one of the most important Vaishnavite  centers of pilgrimage in southIndia. Srirangapattana became the de facto capital of Mysore under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.


Rail Museum

This museum is located near the Mysore Railway station and is the second one of its kind established in India after the one at Delhi. This museum exhibits ancient locomotives and carriages some of which are still in working condition. 


Karanji Lake Nature Park

Karanji Lake was one of the favourite haunts of migratory birds like herons and egrets.The butterfly park has been created on a small island within the Karanji lake. About 45 species of butterflies have been identified here.


Kishkindha Moolika Bonsai Garden

Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Swamy possesses an endless love for greenery and Mother Nature. The greenery in the garden has been variously attributed to the continuing love that pervades the ashram. A trained and dedicated volunteer base is largely responsible for tending and maintaining the garden for nearly three decades now.
