Description

Manali is a hill station nestled in the mountains of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh near the northern end of the Kullu Valley, at an altitude of 2050m in the Beas River Valley,  270 km (168 miles). This small town is the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and from there over the Karkoram Pass onto Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin. It has become a tourist attraction in recent years.

The average temperature during summer is between 04*C (39*F) and 15*C (59*F), winter is between -15*C (5*F) and 05*C (41*F).

The word Manali is regarded as the changed name of "Manu-Alaya" which literally means 'the abode of Manu". Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great floor abd deluged the world.  Manali is also often referred to as the "Valley of the Gods".

Pandoh Dam

ThePandoh Dam  is an embankment dam on the Beas River in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Under the Beas Project, the dam was completed in 1977 and its primary purpose is hydroelectric power generation.


Hidimba Devi Temple - 4.0 kms

The temple is dedicated to Hidimba, wife of Bhima and mother of Ghatotkacha.The temple encloses an enormous rock and a 3-inch brass idol of the goddess. A short distance from this temple is another temple dedicated to Ghatotkacha which features feet carved on a monolithic stone supposed to be of Hidimba Devi.


Manu Temple

The temple is dedicated to the Indian sage Manu, who is said to be the creator of the world and the writer of Manusmriti.The charming location of Manu Temple, on the bank side of river Beas, adds to its attraction.


Tibetan Monastery - 2.5 kms

There are several Tibetan Monasteries have been set up in Manali. The monasteries are rich in preserving the culture of the Tibetan people. The literature and the handicrafts of the people of Tibet are preserved in the Tibetan monasteries in Manali.


Rahla Waterfalls

The fall is surrounded by dense forest cover. Dense woods of Birch and Deodar trees are common. The snow capped Himalayan peaks can be seen in the background.


Manikaran - Hot spring near the river Parvati

The water of the spring is also supposed to have curative powers. The water is so hot that rice can be cooked in it.


Vashisht Hot Sulphur Spring - 3.0 kms

It is the abode of revitalizing sulphur springs which not only relieves your weary body but also has varied therapeutic values.
The springs are said to cure many skin diseases. Many people go to the Vashisht baths to take a dip and rid themselves of skin infections and diseases. 


Solang Valley - 14 kms

 Solang Valley is a side valley 14 kilometers northwest of Manali on the way to Rohtang Pass. The giant lawn slopes of Solang Valley provide great opportunities for summer and winter sports like parachuting, paragliding, skating, zorbing and skiing.


Rohtang Pass - 52 kms

The pass provides a natural divide between the humid Kullu Valley with a primarily Hindu culture (in the south), and the arid high-altitude Lahaul and Spiti Valleys with a Buddhist (in the north). The pass lies on the watershed between the Chenab and Beas basins.


Van Vihar - 2.5 kms

 The animals are kept in their near natural habitat. Most of the animals are either orphaned brought from various parts of the state or those, which are exchanged from other zoos. No animal is deliberately captured from the forest.


Roerich Art Gallery - 18 kms

 Roerich, Russian and Indian painter, son of Helena and Nicholas Roerich, studied from a young age under his father's tutelage.Roerich family's residence in Manali,  is now home for the exquisite gallery of paintings. 


Manikaran - 60 kms

It is at an altitude of 1760 m and is located about 45 km from Kullu. Manikaran is a pilgrimage centre for Hindus and Sikhs.The Hindus believe that Manu recreated human life in Manikaran after the flood, making it a sacred area. It has many temples and a gurudwara.
