Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam (16 kilometres ), in Kerala, India, famous for its backwater tourism. Vembanad Lake is the largest  freshwater lake in the state.Tourism in Kumarakom largely revolves -around the backwaters of the Vembanad Lake.  

Kumarakom is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The bird sanctuary here, which is spread across 14 acre is a favourite haunt of migratory birds and an ornithologist's paradise. A two-hour rowing canoe trip is quite cheap, and is best undertaken in the evening or early morning to avoid the afternoon sun. Bird sanctuary open time is from 6AM to 6PM

Vembanad Lake

Vembanad Lake  is the longest lake in India,and the largest lake in the state of Kerala. It is also counted as one of the largest lakes in India. A lake spanning several districts in the state of Kerala, it is known by different names in different localities viz.Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad, Kochi Lake in Kochi.


Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary is spread over 14 acres on the southern bank of the Kavanar River.There is a system of paths for moving around within the sanctuary. Beyond the sanctuary, there is a boat ride in Vembanad Lake or along the Kavanar River.


Kumarakom Backwaters

The Vembanad lake has become a major tourist location in the past few years because of  its scenic beauty. The most popular location on the shores of the lake is the Kumarakom Tourist Village situated on the east coast of the lake.


Vaikom Mahadeva Temple

Vaikom’s Shiva is fondly called Vaikkathappan. The Shiva Linga here is believed to be from the ‘Treta yuga’ and considered as one of the oldest temples in Kerala where pooja has not been broken since inception.


Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall

Aruvikuzhi is a beautiful picnic spot and an ideal shooting location for stills as well as movies, located in Kottayam. The waterfalls here are falling in five steps and are making a real visual feast. The streams make their way through the landscape of rocks amidst the rubber plantations and the water roars as it cascades down the mountains from a height of 100 ft.
